Lisbon Portugal History
History
Lisbon was not always the capital of Portugal. There were not always chic Lisbon hotels with the light rooms of a high comfort and rich views over the city, green parks and wonderful buildings. And it did not always bear a present name. Phoenicians found it and named Allis Ubbo, it means a beautiful harbor. Due to its beneficial position, it was always an important economic center, and still is.
Many years ago, here lived Moors, they left a huge number of the houses with the ceramic tiles. Lisbon became the capital in 1147. The first king of Portugal Afonso Henriques moved his residence from Kaimbry to this place after the final expulsion of the Moors. Since this time began a new part of Lisbon history.
15th -18th centuries brought another heyday of Lisbon, it was a starting point of all overseas expeditions of the Portuguese, and it was an age of geographical discoveries. 16th century is called the golden age of Portugal, when gold flowed like a river from Brazil. Between 1580 and 1640, Portugal came under Spanish rule, but then again became independent. In 1755 Lisbon was almost completely destroyed by the strongest earthquake, tsunami and fire, but rebuilt according the plan of Marquis Pombal.
Each corner, street and building "hide" the past events of this nice city. Foreigners will continue an acquaintance with the unique history even at the Lisbon hotels, where everything breathes with it and friendly personnel like to tell interesting stories from the old times about the capital of Portugal and famous people, who often stay here. Every room is cute in its own way, and the atmosphere is really fine.
At the beginning of the 19th century, Lisbon was suffered by armies of Napoleon. In 1908, the penultimate king of Portugal Carlos I was shot, who ruled in an authoritarian country; in 1910, the monarchy was finally overthrown, and proclaimed a republic. During World War II Lisbon was one of the few open ports in Europe, where were lots refugees, who wanted to go to the USA. And in April 25th, 1974 Lisbon became the scene of the carnations’ Revolution, which put an end to the dictatorship of the New State and proclaimed the liberal-democratic rule.
Today, it is the most popular and visited place among the big cities. Lisbon streets like the steep hills, because it is built on seven hills. It gives tourists the opportunity to enjoy various panoramas. When they try to peer at its wide gardens, twisting squares, high constructions and convenient cheap Lisbon hotels it is difficult to imagine that many centuries ago there were many wars, revolutions and the earthquake.
